It’s Official: Dentists Have The Best Job Ever

As dentists, you already know how much you enjoy your job. You take pride in your work, knowing that you help your patients achieve better overall wellness through a healthy smile. Now, the rest of the U.S. knows it, too.

In January, U.S. News and World Report released their annual ranking of the 2017 Best Jobs. For the third year in a row, dental professionals are at the top of the list.

In 2017, dentists took the number one spot as the best overall job in the U.S., as well as the best health care job. The rankings used job satisfaction metrics such as growth potential, work-life balance, pay, unemployment, and more. U.S. News assigned a score of 0 to 10 for each profession based on the aforementioned metrics. Dentists scored 8.2.

So, why do you love your job so much? According to the American Dental Education Association, there are ten reasons:

  1. Restore oral health and transform patients’ lives
  2. Gain career independence
  3. Earn a high salary
  4. Have career options
  5. Achieve work-life balance
  6. Shape the future of oral health care
  7. Contribute to the community
  8. Exercise creativity
  9. Work in a team setting
  10. Provide benevolent care

Plus, dentistry is a field that’s growing. The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts an 18 percent growth over the next ten years. Combined with low unemployment rates and the ability to make your own schedule, it’s no wonder why dentists love their jobs so much.

Dental professionals in other specialties ranked high on the list, too. Orthodontists ranked fifth overall and in health care jobs, and fourth in best paying jobs. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons ranked ninth overall and third in best-paying jobs.

Health care careers, in general, are more popular than ever, according to the U.S. News report. This is because “[h]ealth care jobs often require a human element, so they can’t be exported or entirely replaced by robots – at least not yet,” said Susannah Snider, personal finance editor at U.S. News. She also added that the low unemployment rate and high salaries often make for an attractive career path in these fields.
